Youth Cooperation Program

Why we chose this trip?

In this group we are now seven Danish people and eight people from Nepal. Besides that the group includes four Tibetan people who will not be with us the whole program.

There is naturally many different reasons why we are here in Nepal on the YCP. We have selected three people, one from Samaj Sewa Doti, one from Siddhartha Club Kapilvastu Nepal and one from Denmark, to tell about why they are here.

The first one is from Samaj Sewa Doti and his name is Uttam. He’s from the SSD ( a social welfare organisation) which was established in 1991. It’s working in the farwestern region of Nepal in Doti district. The main goal is peacefulness, ecological conservation, gender and human-right. SSD is a partner organisation of MS Nepal, YCP sent a letter to the organisation an as result. Two people which were sent as representatives of the SSD to join us here in Kathmandu.

Uttam hopes that when he returns he will be able to make newsletters and brochures about the SSD. So he’s very happy to get this experience, both learning how to use the computer editing program Pagemaker and how to make newsletters and brochures.

The second person is Anil and he’s from Siddhartha Club Kapilvastu Nepal, which is an organisation that deals with the problem of poverty. They try to encourage self-reliance, awareness and empowerment. When asked why he is here, he said, that it was to share and learn about new cultures and that he was very glad that this program was so youth oriented. In his Club Kapilvastu they work teach the youth good habits. He hopes that YCP will be able to change the role of youth in Nepal – it should be of importance to the country, they are after all the new generation (with serious problems like drug-abuse, which he hopes that a program like the YCP will help to reduce).

The last person is Anne, she is a 21 year old girl from Denmark, who unlike the other two (mentioned on top) paid to go on this trip. Along with six other people from Denmark she made the decision not just to go on a normal journey to Nepal, but to do some work here. It had been her wish for a long time to see Nepal and to know more about religion, country and culture. The work with people from Nepal and Tibet has this far been very successful - She says that she has learned so much, and even found new sides of herself (found out what is good and bad in the lifestyle in both Denmark and Nepal).

She is besides that also lucky because she had the chance to learn the computer-program called Pagemaker, which she also can use when she returns to Denmark and starts on her studies (webdesigns).

But besides all that she hopes to get a lot of experience, knowledge and maybe even some adventures out of this trip!

We have also asked the other participants why they were here, and it seems like a common feeling, that everyone wants to do some good, ether for the Tibetans, The Kyamaias or just the country in general! Another wish is to work together (Nepali, Danish and Tibetan) and in that way to learn about the different countries and cultures.

Many of the people will surely use the knowledge and skills that they get on this YCP program when they return home – both in their organisations or just in daily life!
