Diary
20th to 23rd July

20th July 2001, Norbulingka (Kathmandu)

Today the newsletter group finished their work with the contents of the newsletter. The page maker group will give it final touches. Their job is to structure and fill in the newsletter. They are now already busy structuring the contents of the newsletter.

The recipe group is evaluating their work with the facilitator. They are busy choosing the recipes to go in the book. The recipe book is going to be a bit different than the rest of such books found in the market. This one is going to have something about the history and culture of Tibet. The web page group is now ready to send their work on the web. They have made a diary and small articles about the YCP project.

The following two people are the web group: Angutimmarik and Deepak. Their job is to inform about the activities around the Tibetan camp and write about the YCP project.

The YCP project is almost over now. There are only five days left. But it does not affect the morale of the group. They work as they have done in the past 10 days, patiently and with good spirits.

21th July 2001, Norbulingka (Kathmandu)

Today is an off day. But the group is going for sightseeing. They are going to visit a Buddhist temple called Swayambhunath and a monastery in Pharping.

The temple is also known as the monkey temple (Phakpa Shinngu in Tibetan and Swayambhunath in Nepali). To reach the temple we had to climb up a lot of stairs. It seemed like the stairs would never end. The final destination, which is the stupa, is reached. This is more than 200 meters above Kathmandu. From up here the view is spectacular, as the whole of Kathmandu valley can be seen.

Now the group is going to the Pharping monastery, a Buddhist monastery outside Kathmandu. They go there by bus, and it takes 40 minutes to get there. They arrive and it’s lunchtime now. The lunch is delivered from the local restaurant. And they serve traditional Tibetan food.

Lunchtime is over and the group is going to the monastery. They visit the monastery, and offer gifts for Dalai Lama. They also offer a prayer flag (Dar-Cho in Tibetan). To offer a Dar-Cho you have to climb the threes to rope it. And the lucky one to climb the threes is Utam a YCP volunteer from Nepal.

The sightseeing is over now and the group is returning home. The time is around 3.00 pm. They drive the same route home. And there are no plans for the rest of the day, so they all have off day when they return home.

Ivalu and the Nepali guys

As has been the daily routine, everyone met at the Round building, or the Norbulingka Sports Club. After the meeting, the groups dispersed to do their work. The newsletter group are working on the layout and designing with the help of one member from the PageMaker group. They are working furiously to meet their deadline, which is in two days time. It is good to see them so cheerful though. They are sure they will finish it on time.

The recipe group is working with the corrections from the day before. They also only have two days left to finish their work. But it looks like they will not be able to make the deadline. There is a lot of content. Some of the pictures have yet to be taken. Lot´s of corrections also needs to be done. Today we are all busy. The groups are now working under a lot of pressure; they really have to keep their deadlines. There is only four days left of the YCP project. The work has to be done before they leave for Pokhara.

23th July 2001, Norbulingka (Kathmandu)

Last night one of the participants got the sad news that her mom was not well. She went to the MS guesthouse to call home, since she was far from home. Two of her Danish friends went with her to support her. And today rest of her friends from Denmark and Greenland have joined her in the MS guesthouse.

So there are only a few participants today. They are busy writing articles, some for the web page, some for a Danish magazine, about their experiences as YCP participants.

Ivalu, from Greenland is writing an article in Danish language for a Danish magazine. Jaya, a participant from BASE, a partner organisation of MS-Nepal is writing about her experiences in Nepali. Somebody (one of the participants) will translate it into English for her.

Because there were so less people, not much work was done. But everyone did manage to write an article, which is good.

Having fun!!!
