Danish Senior Tourists paid visit to MS Nepal

By Lone V. Andersen
Danish student of journalism and trainee
with the information unit of MS-Nepal

40 elderly people from ”Jysk Seniorhøjskole” in Denmark now know a lot more about MS-Nepal and their partner organisations after they met with information officer Ib Schou in Boudha.

The two groups of Danes from ”Jysk Seniorhøjskole” were between 60 and 80 years old but the age was no obstruction for getting the most out of their visit. The pensioners enjoyed a very active 16 days tour of Nepal in October visiting the traditional tourist sights of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Nagarkot, Pokhara and Royal Chitwan National Park.

But besides seeing Nepal from a typical tourist’s point of view they wanted to know something about the ”real Nepal” and the problems the developing country is facing. They asked many questions to the information officer about the work and different projects carried out by MS-Nepal and the partner organisations and expressed their support to the development work.

Many of them accentuated their visit to the Tibetan refugee camp in Jawalakhel as being one of the most memorable events during their visit to Nepal. Especially seeing the modest standards of living for the Tibetan refugees at their own age made a great impression on them.

One of them remarked that seeing the conditions for the population in a developing country like Nepal with his OWN EYES and not at a television screen finally made him realize the urgent need for supporting development work.

The arrangement is to be repeated with the next groups of Danes from ”Jysk Seniorhøjskole” visiting Nepal year 2000.
