Nepal
is known all over the world for its colourful holidays and
festivals. It is said that every day in one year, at least one
festival is celebrated somewhere in Nepal.Certain times of the
year, particularly August and September towards the end of
monsoon, are packed with festivals but the main festival period,
Dashain and Tihar, is in October and November. In these days
thousands of Nepalis hit the road to return home to celebrate with
their families. For me, it has been a big experience to take part
in the last season’s festivals;
To observe the holy places full of atmosphere. For a western
development worker this atmosphere is too difficult to understand,
to observe is enough!
To
observe all the different people. It seems that everybody are
invited or just found the place and take part in their own way!
To
observe the holy ceremonies. What is going on? -you are allowed to
take part or just to be an onlooker!
To observe the smell of all the different odours through your
nose-and taste on it. Some of the odours are not recognizable for
my nose!
Once
when I go back to Denmark. I know I will often think back on my
time in Nepal. The experiences from the festivals will fill up a
lot - and as I see the festival time - it is a time for everybody
- everybody has a “ place “ during the festival time. It is not
usually in every culture that everybody are “ invited”.
And compared to other countries it is quite interesting to see the
mix of cultures and in addition that these culture share and
celebrate each other’s festivals. The exhibition placed in the hall
at the CO, covers photos from different festivals in Kathmandu
Valley during the festival season this year.
