We tell our daughters to have less children than us

“I have four sons and one daughter. Had I known about prevention I would have given less births,” says a female member of ‘Chaudhary Husband and Wife group’, living in Dhankauli VDC, Kapilvastu district.

For the women of the group family planning was not an issue when they started to have children. And when they came to know about prevention methods they were all very skeptic. Another woman remembers: “ We thought that the injection (contraceptive) would hinder us in doing our work in the field, so we hesitated to go and get it.”

But after ‘Sunshine Social Development Organisation’’ provided the village with correct information on safe motherhood and the possibilities to control the number of children, all villagers in Dhadihawa do family planning.

The group members regularly attend the clinic in ‘Sunshine´s office in Chettradai, where a ‘ANM’ – Assistant Nurse Midwife - is ready to give pregnancy check ups and help the villagers with questions on health and child care. A member summarizes the learnings which are going to be transferred to the next generation of women in Dhadihawa: “We are now aware about safe motherhood , therefore we will tell our daughters that they are free to choose how many children they want.”
