A new community school in Dhadihawa

In Dhadihawa , Dhankauli VDC, the children would normally start going to school at the age of 12. After 20 minutes walk to the small village of Chettradai they would join 3rd class at the Secondary school. But their class mates were both younger and more experienced. The children of Dhadihawa were not prepared for going to school and since many of them did not even get the chance to study, a group of parents decided to take action.

In four neighbouring villages they went for home visits. Other parents were encouraged to participate in the idea originated from the Chaudhary Husband and Wife Saving Group: To help their children’s education by establishing their own primary school. The local NGO ‘Sunshine Social Development Organization’ supported the group both morally and financially. The NGO is a member of the network of local NGO’s which the MS Nepal partner organization KSSC has established. Soon the group managed to mobilize enough local resources to build a mud house and make a compound in the outskirts of the small village.

55 students are now attending the school. One teacher is attached and all parents are actively involved in running the school. The interests from a revolving fund of 50.000 rupies and financial support from MS Nepal’s consultant Dr. B.S.Thakur cover the expenses. The primary school “Dhadihawa Community School” is not registered as a government school. But it is registered as a community school under the District Education Office and the Children Education Program.

“Now all children from Dhadihawa go to school from five years of age - both girls and boys, says Rati Ram Tharu who is 42 years old and lives in Dhadihawa. He continues,
“My father used to ask me: ”Why go to school? That does not bring any money. It is better to work.” But we have understood the importance of education and support each other in sending our children to school.”
