Resources Available

Seed

Guaranteed open pollinated, all traditional varieties (unless stated), suitable to many climatic zones (800-10,000ft).

Vegetables & Grains :

maize, millet, amaranthus (red & white), buckwheat, Chenapodium, pumpkin and other squash, cucumber, chilli, runner bean, fava bean, aubergine, ladies’ finger, sesame, carrot, and many more

Trees :

*neem (Azadirachta indica) - extremely valuable as pest control from leaves and oil. Very short viability, available June-July.
*wild cherry (Prunus ceracoides) - May
*wild pear (Pyrus pashea) - Sept.-Jan.
*wild peach (Prunus persica) - Nov.-Feb.
(the above 3 ideal for root stock)
*Bauhinia purpurea & B.variagata - fodder, edible flowers
*Indian Bead Tree (Melia azadirach)- upland relative of neem: pest control, timber, bee fodder.
*Sesbania grandiflora - edible flowers, pods, leaves
*Zanthoxylum alatum - high alt., thorny, edible fruit (spicy), bird fodder.
*Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae salicifolia) - multi-purpose, high altitude (>1900m) nitrogen fixer; fruit (high vit.C and medicines), fuel, fodder, bee forage

Green manures

Sesbania sesban, S. aculeata, S. rostrata, Crotalaria juncea, C. siamea, Cassia spp., buckwheat, mustard, tobacco, white clover, etc.

Fodder Grasses and Border Plants

Comfrey, Lemon Grass, Napier

Honey

Finest creamy Chiuri honey; medicinal value . Retail price in Nepal NRs 220/- (US$4) per kg (direct from the JPP)

Neem Oil

The JPP has stocks of up to 200 litres of neem oil, valuable medicine and pest control. NRs 225/- per litre. Contact the JPP for details and orders.

Ethnobotanical products for local health

Colour poster displaying ailments and plants used for their relief and cure. Tried & tested in Jajarkot & Surkhet as an educational tool. Also book with details of over 600 remedies & their preparation methods for 45 different ailments.

Songs from the JPP

A collection of eight songs with spoken introductions, about the Homestead, Environment, Sustainable Agriculture and Development. Written by JPP farmers and staff, recorded at Radio Nepal, Surkhet. Cost NRs 70/- Contact JPP for orders.

Our trainings emphasize the importance of ecological health and farmers’ traditional wisdom, as well as combining appropriate new and/or improved technologies. All trainings are given in Nepali language.

Specialized Training

1. Integrated Farming Systems’ Training.
Farms #1, #2, #3 & #4, Jajarkot; Gumi V.D.C. Resource Centre, Surkhet; Bhatanpur RC, Nepalganj; Sita Paila RC, Kathmandu. For Farmers’ leaders and grass-roots extension workers. Available to groups on request.

Topics include: low external input and sustainable agriculture (LEISA) techniques: use of green manures, intercropping, planting for diversity, mulching, etc.; minimum tillage techniques; soil erosion control and soil building approaches; water conservation and management; nursery establishment and operation; planting techniques, live fencing; agroforestry; integrated pest management (IPM); fruit tree production and care; kitchen gardens; seed saving for vegetables composting techniques; small farm design.

2. Permaculture Design Course. Nov. 19 - Dec. 2 1999 (Mangsir 3 -16), Gumi V.D.C. Resource Centre, Surkhet.
For Farmers’ leaders and grass-roots extension workers. Duration: 14 days

Course fees are charged, but part exchange for seed, seedlings, books and educational material will be accepted.
